MyCentralJersey.com: Swamp wars: Group looks to protect Central Jersey wetlands

This beaver habitat within the Dismal Swamp is threatened by development.

One man’s stinky, useless swamp is another man’s beautifully abounding treasure, environmentalists say.

If that’s the case, there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that is the dream of the Edison Wetlands Association, an environmental watchdog and education group that aims to make an outdoor education center out of the Dismal Swamp Conservation Area that borders Edison, South Plainfield and Metuchen.

But first the group and other environmentalists must continually protect the 1,250-acre mix of forest, meadows and Environmental Protection Agency Priority fresh-water wetlands from developers, polluters and authorities who are permissive to both.
