New Jersey beach water exceeded the national standard for bacteria in 5 percent of the samples tested in 2009 – up from 3 percent the prior year – according to a report released by the Natural Resources Defense Council  on Wednesday. Much of the increase was likely due to increased rainfall early last summer, which causes runoff and sewer overflows that dump contaminants and untreated sewage into the water, said Larry Levine, an attorney for the NRDC’s NY/NJ Harbor Bight Project. Overall, New Jersey’s oceans ranked in the middle of the pack nationally in 2009, 14th among 30 states with coastal or Great Lakes beaches, according to the report. New York beach water quality ranked 23 among the 30 states in the report.
